How to Properly Wear a Medical Mask

Proper Use of Medical Masks

According to the World Health Organization, wearing a mask alone may not protect you against contracting the coronavirus. Still, when combined with proper hand cleaning and good hygiene, it can be effective.

When Should You Wear a Medical Mask?

If you are healthy, you only need to wear a medical mask if you are taking care of someone who may be showing symptoms of the coronavirus. If you are coughing or sneezing, wearing a medical mask can reduce the spread of germs. A medical mask is only effective if you wash your hands frequently and properly with soap and water or hand sanitizer containing alcohol.

The CDC has recommended that everyone covers their face when in public, especially when it is impossible to stay 6 feet away from others. Here is a list of tips on how to make your own face covering.

How to Properly Use Your Medical Mask

Properly wearing a medical mask can help to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Here are the steps to take when wearing a medical mask:

  • Before wearing your medical mask, clean your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Ensure a good fit by covering your mouth and nose with the mask and check to make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
  • Avoid touching your mask while you are wearing it. If you do touch your mask, wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • If your mask becomes damp, replace it with a new one. Do not reuse single-use masks.
  • When removing your mask, do not touch it from the front. Remove the mask from behind and dispose of it immediately into a closed garbage bin. Next, wash your hands with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
If you or a loved one living with you is experiencing respiratory symptoms, follow the proper instructions on wearing a medical mask and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
