Dialysis

Life on Dialysis and Mental Health

Life with any chronic disease can be challenging. It’s not uncommon to experience depression, anxiety, and loneliness. Here are some tips on how to cope.

Find Support From Family, Friends, and Peers
Family and friends can provide wonderful support when life gets hard. Also, befriending someone who receives dialysis can help you stay more positive on your good days and better cope on days where you feel down. Sharing your tips, successes, and fears can make life easier and more fun.

Staying Active
Playing with your pet, taking in the fresh air, and getting out on physician-approved exercises and other activities can help increase your endorphins and reduce anxiety and depression. Staying active can also mean keeping busy with activities you love: a jigsaw puzzle, a good book, knitting, or writing down thoughts in a journal.

Talk Honestly With Your Doctor
Everyone has a down day or two. However, if you’re feeling down all the time and just don’t seem to enjoy anything anymore, take to your doctor honestly about how you are doing. There are things that can help. This may include resources on how to cope with CKD and live a better life. Satellite Healthcare also has a helpful online library of valuable information about living with CKD and dialysis treatments.
