Dialysis Patients and the Emergency Department
Authors: Gopa B. Green MD and Graham Abra MD
Patients with dialysis-requiring end-stage kidney disease have among the highest rates of emergency department utilization of all patients with chronic medical conditions.
While emergency department visits are entirely appropriate if patients are experiencing acute symptoms, excess emergency department utilization may also represent failures of the system to address chronic conditions and the comorbidity burden of complex dialysis patients.
We hope the attached White Paper stimulates you and your colleagues to think about ways to address this challenging issue.
